Terms of use

What you are agreeing to by using these tools, and — more importantly — what a result from this site does and does not mean.

What these terms cover

These terms apply to every page on SubtitleMatrix. By using the site you accept them. The tools are free to use, there is no account, and no payment is involved at any point.

You keep every right you had in your own files. Nothing is transferred to this site, because no file is ever sent to it. If you do not accept these terms, the remedy is simply not to use the site.

Compliance checks are not legal advice

Some pages check a subtitle file against published accessibility requirements, such as reading speed limits, characters per line, minimum display duration, and the indication of speaker changes and non-speech information. Those pages name the clause or threshold they applied and report whether the file passed.

That report is a self-check performed by software. It is not legal advice, not an audit, and not a certification of conformity, and it does not create any obligation on this site to have got it right. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and by contract, and they are updated. Before relying on a file to meet an accessibility obligation, have the result reviewed by someone qualified to sign off on it.

How accurate the results are

The loss report on a conversion page is derived from the capability matrix, which describes what each subtitle format can represent. It is a lower bound. A specific file may contain features the format permits but the matrix does not model, and those will not be listed.

The converters themselves aim to preserve everything the target format can hold, and to discard the rest explicitly rather than reinterpret it. Where a target format stores time at a coarser resolution, values are rounded, and the report says so. You should always open the output and check it before using it in production. The media pages depend on OCR and speech recognition, which produce a best effort rather than a guaranteed transcription: read and correct the output before relying on it.

No warranty

The tools and their output are provided as they are, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

Limits of liability

To the extent permitted by law, this site is not liable for any loss arising from use of the tools or from reliance on their output, including lost work, missed deadlines, rejected deliverables or failed accessibility obligations.

Your files and your data

Files you open in a tool are processed inside your browser and are never transmitted to this site. What is and is not stored is set out on the privacy page, which these terms incorporate.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change without notice. The version published on this page at the time you use the site is the version that applies.
